Before and After All-on-4 Dental Implants

Dr. Fred | June 21, 2023

Missing teeth is a common issue for adults in the United States. In fact, research indicates that as much as 50% of the population is missing at least one tooth. Tooth loss is more common among adults over the age of 65, with approximately 30% missing all or most of their teeth.

Unfortunately, missing teeth can cause a variety of issues including difficulty chewing and speaking, as well as gum disease, additional tooth loss, and much more. Replacement is critical to ensure the best oral and overall health.

The gold standard for tooth replacement is dental implants. However, this option can be costly, especially if you are replacing most or all of your teeth. Conventional dentures, on the other hand, are much more affordable, but come with a variety of disadvantages themselves.

Dr. Fred Tepedino at Dental Arts of Florida offers a better solution: All-on-4 dental implants. This tooth replacement solution offers the affordability of conventional dentures with the stability of dental implants.

In this article, we’ll explain more about All-on-4 dental implants and what you can expect this treatment to do for you.

All-On-4

What is All-on-4 Dental Implants

All-on-4 dental implants is a system used to replace all missing teeth in either the upper or lower arch with just 4 dental implants. The implants are strategically placed in the jawbone to support greater stability and bite force than traditional dentures. Plus, it is much less expensive than replacing an entire arch of missing teeth with single dental implants.

On average, two All-on-4 arches cost approximately $24,000, whereas it can cost $60,000+ to replace each tooth with a single dental implant.

All-on-4 Dental Implants vs Traditional Implants

How long does it take?

The entire process from placing the implants to attaching the overdenture can be done in one day Typically requires several months to a year or more depending on how long it takes to heal between stages

How much does it cost?

On average, $12,000 per arch or $24,000 for a full mouth Can cost up to $60,000+ to replace each tooth with a single dental implant

How long do they last?

The implants themselves last a lifetime, the overdenture should last 20 years or more with proper care and maintenance The implants themselves last a lifetime, the crown should last 15 years or more- but may also last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance

Food Restrictions?

Once healed, you can eat anything you like- but should stick to a soft food diet while healing. Once healing has taken place, you will have no restrictions- but it’s best to stick with soft foods while healing

Things you should know before All-on-4 dental implants

In order to qualify for dental implants, you must have adequate jawbone density and good oral hygiene habits. If you have active gum disease, you will need to get that under control before you can have the implants placed. Since the implants are strategically placed in the jaw, you can have some jawbone deterioration. However, if you have too much, a bone graft will need to be performed to build up the jawbone.

Things you should know after All-on-4 dental implants

Once you are healed, you can eat anything you like. All-on-4 dental implants offer greater bite and chewing force than conventional dentures. Plus, they don’t slip around in the mouth when eating or talking, so they will be much more comfortable.

All-on-4 Dental Implants FAQs

Missing teeth can lead to a variety of oral and overall health issues. Therefore, timely replacement is critical. All-on-4 is an affordable, stable way to replace teeth- but many patients have questions. Below are some of the most common questions that we get about this tooth replacement solution.
All-on-4 dental implants are permanently secured in place with the dental implants. You do not have to remove them for cleaning, and they do not require any special care considerations. Simply brush your teeth twice daily as you normally would. Make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste.
Traditional dental implants take several months to a year or more from start to finish, but with All-on-4 dental implants, you leave the clinic with a full set of teeth on the day of your implant surgery. That is why it is often referred to as “teeth in a day”.
Once your implants completely heal, you will have no food restrictions. However, for the first few days, you’ll want to stick to a liquid diet. Then, you can transition to a soft food diet. After a few months, you can begin to transition back to your normal diet.
Ideally, food should not get stuck under your All-on-4 dental implants. However, it may happen for a couple of reasons: the prosthesis is inadequately shaped or there is a small gap between the prosthesis and the gums. Either way, the problem can be resolved. Make sure to let Dr. Tepedino and the team know if you are having these problems.
No, All-on-4 dental implants are not removable. The overdenture is designed to be permanently secured in place on the implants. Only the dentist can remove it during exams and cleanings or if there needs to be a repair/replacement.
No, All-on-4 dental implants are fixed in place. Only the dentist will be able to remove them during your exams and cleanings.
